The image above is a screen shot from our scope. The yellow line shows the current being drawn by the coil packs of a six cylinder BA Falcon, each spike is a spark. The customer was reporting an intermittent misfire. Notice the curved shape of the forth spike, that's a faulty coil pack and the cause of our misfire.
In this case the customer was reporting a bad misfire. The yellow line shows the current being drawn by the starter motor during cranking, each spike is one of the four cylinders passing through TDC on its compression stroke. Notice the pattern repeats every 4th spike, that's because it's a 4 cylinder. The uneven height of the spikes is due to uneven compression, it had a blown head gasket.
In this trace the blue line is the signal from a cam angle sensor, and the purple is the crank angle sensor signal. The rise in the purple line should align with the fall in the blue line. The fact that they don't shows that the cam timing is out, the engine turned out to have a stretched timing chain.
